Dear Mothers – and those who seek to become a Mother someday,
I hope you had the loveliest day.
I thought I’d share with you the most important thing I ever learned about motherhood…
It is to remember to mother yourself; nurture yourself; take care of your health and your body; show respect to yourself. All of these things are actually an act of love for those you nurture. If you can’t mother and honor yourself, it is very difficult to mother another.
In my twenties, I did things that didn’t show the best respect to myself. I actually wanted a relationship with someone who didn’t fully respect me and treat me well – and I even married him. I didn’t care for my body in the best way (too much sugar, not enough healthy food-I thought I could get away with it), I worked way, way too much. I depleted my energies and health in loads of ways. I had to learn (from scratch) how to better honor myself, respect myself, and essentially mother myself. It was the best thing I ever did. It changed my life. I began to respect my body with whole foods, I worked less, I learned how to react to little things in a better way so I could conserve my energy. I became someone who could be a better mother, if the opportunity came. And it has led to the best life I could imagine.
May we all be inspired this year to be mothers to ourselves. It is always a work in progress. But it is truly the formula for being a better mother to others.
Have you had any successes lately in caring for yourself or showing more respect/love/honor for yourself? In what ways do you pull it off?
