One of the MUST DOs in Ecuador is to stay at one of the country’s beautiful hacienda hotels. I had been wanting to do that ever since I started reading about Ecuador. So, on our way back from Colombia, we made that little dream happen by staying at one of Ecuador’s most famous, beautiful hotels for Easter. It’s called La Mirage
and it’s in the quaint little leather town of Ecuador called Cotacachi, two hours from Quito. It was a place worth showing on the blog (I had toured it last November when we visited) and so, you know…we decided to do a little “travel research” for you all. 🙂 🙂 The owner of La Mirage was so extremely kind and generous to oblige by providing us a room.
First of all, the grounds of La Mirage were out of this world!!!! Part of me didn’t want to leave the property as you could just wander or sit and enjoy what felt like a secret garden in the Andes.
Peacocks were strolling along the grounds (!) Every morning at breakfast we were seated at tables with the most perfect view of the gardens and peacocks while the sweetest indigenous women, dressed in their gorgeous skirts and embroidered blouses, served us. Breakfast had never felt so fancy.
This was our private suite. We had so much space that we only wished all our Brooklyn friends were there with us for a big Easter weekend. Each evening as we walked to our room we could hear frogs singing. It was so magical!
Here’s a sampling of some of the rooms. Each suite is completely unique!
Every evening, a gentlemen would come and light the fire in our room. Ahhh…that was heavenly. We would move some comfy chairs closer to the fireplace and talk or read or write something for the blog. A fireplace is definitely on my list for a home someday.
Ecuador is the number one exporter of roses. So, roses are EVERYWHERE in hotels and restaurants. They make everything feel so fancy.
OK, and now let’s talk about the food.
You know how Danny and I are very particular about food – especially if it’s at a nice place (our expectations are just a little higher then.)
Well, La Mirage knocked it out of the park. We LOVED the dishes and flavors – all using local and typical Ecuadorian ingredients. And the service was really, really delightful. If you ever stay at La Mirage, we definitely recommend treating yourself to a wonderful dinner there!
One fun detail…they brought out part of the meal inside a music box!
And now, the Spa……they are famous for this Spa and now I can see why.
They have female shamans who perform not only massage, but spiritually based rituals and techniques. They first bathe you in an herbal bath in your private room (um, I never experienced that before), then they wrapped me in a hot wrap- for purification – followed by a massage and all kinds of other rituals, and then a facial. It was incredible!!! It was the most amazing thing to do after the hike we did earlier that day.
, thank you for the most memorable, delightful stay!! We felt spoiled and cared for and can’t wait to visit again.
I would be beyond giddy if some of you got to enjoy a visit, too. Let me know if you ever stay there! (By the way, they do special engagement ceremonies and vow renewal ceremonies by a shaman. Wouldn’t that be so amazing and memorable?!)
And now since I feel a bit spoiled after for sharing this incredible place with you – – tell me, what is the most amazing, fanciest place you’ve ever stayed? (Growing up – for me that was Motel 6. ha.)
