Every New Yorker Needs a Driver

OK, every New Yorker would be in HEAVEN with their own personal driver.  But unless you're the CEO of some company, you likely don't have one.  I never thought I'd have one.

But we do now.

Yep.  Instead of hopping into random cabs at the airport (after standing in huge lines, only to hop in with a cabbie who takes you the long way) or calling our neighborhood car service with crazy drivers, we call a driver named Nazrul.

Nazrul lives in our neighborhood.  He works for a local car service company (but has a few private clients on the side).  He drives like a dream and wears a seat belt (is it just me or have you noticed that  drivers who don't wear seat belts are often the same ones who tailgate and switch lanes like crazy??)  Nazrul's car is super clean and well taken care of AND it's one of those mini SUVs so you get to avoid being swallowed up in car sickness by the back seat dungeon.  He is super responsive by text.  He knows what we look like (and we know his car) so there's no guessing when we're standing on the curb of JFK.  He also knows the quickest route to our apt.  We don't even have to explain the convoluted route, we just enjoy the ride.  And, we have awesome conversations about his newborn baby and his wife and their happy arranged marriage.

So just like that, we got ourselves a driver in New York. If you've ever paid for a cab or a car service, you can have one too.  Just wait for a good driver to come along and ask for his card. Or you can call or text Nazrul.  917-640-7519.  (He says he'll take on customers in any borough!  He has space for 5 passengers, and can offer car seats if you ask.)  I promise, you'll feel like a million bucks texting him from the plane to say you've arrived.  Icing on the cake:  he's ALWAYS cheaper than a cab!!!!!!!

And...you can avoid this after a long flight:

And - a boring question for you all...do you have a favorite set of luggage??  Yes, we have to buy luggage.  Our luggage got beat up pretty badly on this last trip and I've now realized it's the last thing I want to buy.

P.S.  THANKS SO MUCH for all the awesome comments yesterday!  I'm so inspired by you moms. Really.  I'm so grateful to hear from you and to get a taste of what it's like.

  1. Mara & Danny! The best luggage in the world is made by OGIO (a UT company), it has a lifetime warranty and is awesome! I travel loads and loads. I have had mine now for 5 years and it still looks/and works great.

  2. Travel Pro..all of the pilots & flight attendants use this brand (good enough rec for me). I have had mine for ages and it still works like new!!

  3. TUMI. It's definitely an investment (sometimes you can find new TUMI luggage on ebay) but it will last forever. Excellent customer service, too.

  4. Luggage. We just got ourselves the TUMI Alpha Bravo and it is AMAZING. I can't believe we went without it for so long! I am a former flight attendant and I had the Travel Pro, but I love the TUMI more.

  5. Oh man, THANK YOU ALL for the recommendations so far. I've been scouring the websites you recommended all morning. So many good options.

  6. I flew 80% of my time for the past two years and would be lost without my Eagle Creek suitcases. Lifetime warranty on almost everything, and works beautifully with their packing modules (if you so choose). Not quite as pretty as TUMI...but definitely a workhorse.

  7. Check out Tom Bihn. Beautiful bags, great quality, made in the US and comfortable to carry (great for when you have to schlep your bags up stairs). http://www.tombihn.com/travel_bags/TB0906.html

  8. Perfect timing! My 20 year-old suitcase that has taken me through high school, study-abroad, honeymoon, and countless other trips all around the world, has finally had it's last trip. The handle popped off last weekend as I was racing to catch a flight in Atlanta! So happy to see everyone's recommendations. Mara, I just love this blog! I stumbled upon your love story, and read nearly all of it in one night, and have been a daily reader ever since. I just love your positive outlook and perspective! Take care! xo

  9. Thank you for information about Nazrul! I'll be in New York the last week of June and might have to call him for airport pick up.
Victorinox Swiss Army luggage has treated me very well. I've never seen another suitcase like mine in baggage claim, so it never gets picked up by someone else. Plus it's study and has some type of handle on all four sides. I roll it over curbs and down stairs and so far, it's held up like a dream.

  10. I recommend the Quickload Luggage from LLBean. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/48311?feat=quickload-SR0&page=quickload-luggage-set
This link is for a set, but I only have the smaller roller bag. I travel frequently for work. I've had this piece for at least 5 years and it's still in great shape. Fits easily in the overhead bin. And it really holds a lot! Also, very affordable.

  11. I've used bennetton luggage since I was 10 (8 international flights at least a year) and I love that stuff. It's super hard to find these days, but it's bright and leery and often first on the carousel. Can't support it highly enough! The latest 'carry on' suitcase I was given had skateboard wheels - seriously the best idea ever!
