Let's Talk Flowers

Do you all like getting flowers delivered?  I once dated a guy and his sister was a florist.  I got lots and lots of flowers, which was really fun.  But my practical side says I'd rather have money spent on a fine meal or a pair of shoes.  How about you?  Do you love getting surprised with flowers (or something else)?

XO,

Mara

P.S.  My favorite flowers are tuberose and peony.  I was so lucky to get this tuberose lei at Mama's Fish House during our romantic dinner there in Maui...and the lei just FILLED our hotel room with the most beautiful fragrance for days after.  I woke up to this fragrance nearly every day in Hawaii.  It really is one of the most beautiful smells in the world to me.  What is your favorite flower?

  1. I LOVE flowers. They're the best kind of surprise. When the impracticality gets to me, I say give me a potted plant with flowers. :) I collect them. They never fail to make me happy.

  2. I like being surprised with flowers, but I'd usually pick something else as a surprise- like chocolate or fancy socks or a beautiful book. But any surprise is welcome, really :)

  3. There is nothing like getting flowers! My boyfriend ordered flowers for me the first day of my new job a while back and I was so smitten I'm still smiling!! =)

  4. I hate flowers. My friends think I'm crazy. But I would MUCH rather a thoughtful gift of something else! My favorite was a $1 thrift store copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories from my then boyfriend (now husband).

  5. I like getting flowers because they are not practical, I like that they are a gift that will only last for a few days, but will bring beauty and joy while they last. Although just this morning I was thinking that if someone is going to be getting me flowers for Valentine's day this year, I'd really rather have a fern.

p.s. my favorite flower is the dahlia.

  6. Hi Mara, there's one thing I will say about flowers - buy local if you must. A lot of flowers are flown in from Columbia or other countries. These flowers are dipped in chemicals to make them last longer & these chemicals are harmful to people who work on them. Not to mention that they're flown in on planes which is also bad for the environment. I do appreciate flowers but I'd rather appreciate them in their wild state (outside :). xo, Rita

    1. Rita, I am SOOO glad you wrote in! I remember you telling me this detail many years ago and it has kind of turned me away from buying cut flowers at delis and what not. THANK YOU!

  7. ps: plants are also great - orchids last longer than cut flowers and they're beautiful.

  8. I told my new husband 40+ years ago to never bring me flowers. And he never did. I have said some other stupid things in my life, too.

  9. I actually dislike receiving flowers. A lot. Of course, my initial reaction every time I see flowers is how beautiful they are. But a few seconds later, they just make me sad. I feel bad that human's desire to own something pretty cut a living thing's life short and plucked that thing from nature. I'd rather the gorgeous flower live out its natural lifespan in nature. I look at a rose and think what a shame it was that it got cut from its bush and it will die so much sooner.

As someone mentioned above, the environmental impact of growing and selling flowers also breaks my heart. The environmental (pesticides, bad land use, flying flowers all over the world) and human toll (lots of stories written about health problems of those who harvest flowers from all the pesticides and harms to the community from fly-over pesticide applications) are heart-breaking.

Finally, I don't like receiving flowers because they are such a generic gift. Every romantic movie or TV show and countless commercials have told men to get women flowers. I don't feel special when a guy acts on this conditioning. As some have stated above, I'd rather receive a thoughtful, personalized gift. Even a thoughtful, free gift means more than flowers.

And if I want flowers, I'll get a potted plant or plant some outside.

  10. Tropical flowers, such as those used to make leis, make me especially sad, though they are beautiful. Those flowers often live for months on their trees or vines and decorate nature so beautifully. Then they are picked, shipped across the world, only to die after a week or so.

  11. I guess I'm too practical. Sigh. I would also rather choose to have nice pair of shoes or something lasting like a plant. Peonies are my favorite flower as well, particularly the pale-pale pink ones. When they are in season, I will go against my practicality and buy a bunch or two at Trader Joes because they are inexpensive and they are not able to grow outside in this part of the country.

  12. I'm practical too. I'd rather have something I'm going to use. Plus a giant bouquet takes up space. A single flower and a modest shopping spree is a much sweeter gesture to me :) Though I am on the market right now for a nice potted orchid.

I loooove tuberose. We scattered them all over the tables at our wedding reception. The whole room smelled heavenly. I also had white lilies in my hair. I just adore its' simple, graceful lines. I guess those are my top 3: orchids, tuberose and lilies.

  13. Oh boy! This girl loves peonies, personally. And I will always love getting flowers.

  14. I recently bought myself a rose as a little treat, and it really uplifted me for the week. It's beautiful and it smells divine. So I came to the realisation that I love flowers. But I know a bunch of flowers is usually REALLY expensive (in my opinion!). But I bought one flower for about $4 and it gave me more pleasure than a block of chocolate AND wasn't bad for my health. I'd like to receive a single flower every now and then :) Sometimes less is more.

  16. I HATE getting flowers - a waste of money (they die) and they take NO effort ot thought. For the same price I'd rather go out for lunch or receive a small gift i.e. a candle or a scarf or something that lasts more than 4 days.
