And you guys - I got so very lucky. Yesterday I was texting with the J.Crew stylist who taught a workshop I put together awhile back. (See all her tips I've written out for you here & here & here, in case you missed them.) It turns out that we were going to meet up today to discuss a few projects/workshops for this year and she said she'd just come over and help me pick out my outfits, too. SO fun, right? It was amazing to have someone take a fresh look at what I already had. Here are the outfits of the day...

Scarlet dress. Double belts. Danny's scarf. Burgundy shoes.
Taffeta skirt, silk top, men's leather belt, winter white jacket (a little piece Marina brought with her)
Harvey shirt, J.Crew pencil skirt, men's leather belt, flower in my pocket.
Cozy for the plane: Harvey shirt. Danny's sweater. Blue denim from Target.
Lace dress, jacket from Old Navy from many years ago, Danny's scarf (he doesn't know yet that I'll be borrowing all his stuff. :) :) [Note to commenters: I have a longer slip for this dress, but it didn't make it into the quick snap shot at home!]
Harvey silk circle skirt, Danny's J.Crew chambray shirt (unbuttoned and crossed over in front for a tighter fit), necklace made longer using ribbon from my closet.
Silk top, taffeta skirt. Pink belt & flower.
Lacy top, lots of necklaces, men's leather belt, and Danny's black denim from Uniqlo
(unbuttoned in front and crossed over for a tighter fit, then pulled tight with the belt.)
What do you think? For me, I'd say these beat the cozy pajama pants and cozy sweater I normally wear while blogging. :)
Alright, have a great week, everyone! I have a few posts I may share with you while I'm away. And I hope to write a bit from the road. I'm so excited to see the next several days unfold.
-M
P.S. Marina's expertise is helping people to style items they already have as well as recommending items that need to be replaced. She works with clients in New York or anywhere and has affordable rates. I know she is working with some clients in Salt Lake City this month. Hi there! I'm a new reader (loving it)...and I'm sure you've talked about your lipstick color before, but do you mind sharing again?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
This lipstick was my Vera Moore in Diva Orange. It's a good one.
DeleteHello! I'm also a new reader and I really admire this blog. You have some very beautiful and inspirational things to say about life and love. That being said... your style? Nothing short of excellent! Using men's belts is genius! Has anyone ever told you you look a little like British actress Honeysuckle Weeks? Just an observation.
ReplyDeleteI love your outfits! Do you have any suggestions on how to find someone as awesome as Marina if we don't live in NYC?
ReplyDeletemmm...maybe check in w/ your favorite stores and ask if they know of anyone that does fashion styling. Perhaps one of their employees does styling on the side. Also, check in with universities or community colleges. There are likely some fashion classes. Perhaps you could get in touch with that department and request an intern or a top student to hire. Also, research to see if there's a fashion blogger in your area. They might be available for styling or might know of someone. GOOD LUCK!
DeleteThanks Mara for the tips. I didn't even to think about a fashion blogger... great idea. Thanks again.
DeleteI LOVE all of them...so cute and hip.
ReplyDeletePS Does Marina know anybody in Arizona that does what she does?
ReplyDeleteI know of Reachel Bagley from http://www.cardiganempire.com/.
DeleteWhat fun to see all of your outfits! Thanks for sharing yours and Marina's creativity with us. I just signed up for my very first conference and am already feeling a bit nervous about what I should wear, so I'm probably going to come back to this post for inspiration when I'm packing :)
ReplyDeletewow, all of these outfits look amazing on you and i love that yellow silky top you have! totally smashing. hope ALT is a blast!
ReplyDeletelove the outfit with danny's pants! Totally awesome, very creative and adorbs! (The lace dress needs a liner under the lace to make it long enough -modest is hottest!) haha you look great! have a great time!
ReplyDeleteTotally disagree there is nothing wrong with the lace dress, it's modestly sexy. Love the way the lace hangs, it's great. That girl has no clue what she's talking about!
DeleteMy favorite is the lace dress with the old nAvy jacket! Looks so feminine and chic!
ReplyDeleteso so many things i love! the white jacket she let you borrow is REALLY great.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the last outfit with the mens jeans!!
ReplyDeleteAlways wanted a stylist to come and dress me. You look great! BUT I'm way more interested in baby news... I know it's about that time and you'll post when you are ready but I'm sending my very best thoughts to you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteAh - baby news! So our embryos are still frozen because I have to get a surgery for endometriosis before we finish up the IVF stuff. But that will all happen soon & I'll keep everyone posted. xo
DeleteYou look amazing! The outfits rock and I am sure you will be a hit at Alt. Go and have a great time and I look forward to all your pictures!
ReplyDeleteYou look so great! Love all of these outfits!
ReplyDeleteWow all outfits so creative! I personally loved the Harvey circle skirt with Danny's chambray shirt, everything balanced, the nude shoes, the belt and matte gold accessories - perfect!

ReplyDeleteoh my word. the integration of guys' pieces into these outfits is perfect. (and who doesn't love free clothing?!)
ReplyDeleteWow. You have a wonderful sense of style. Even if those things were in my closet (or my hubby's) I'd never be able to put them together like that. Thanks for sharing, it was fun!
ReplyDeleteHI Mara,
ReplyDeleteYOu are too cute! I am serving a mission and love that skirt from Harvey faircloth... could I still find it? or where might I find some like it? Any ideas would be lovely! Thanks!
Hello! Unfortunately that skirt is not available any longer...
DeleteI'm not sure what's out there these days at other shops. Sorry I couldn't be more help!
Anonymous (and Mara!), I was also TOTALLY entranced by the Harvey Circle skirt; i'm determined to MAKE one. In case Anonymous would like to as well, this is the one I'm going to work from, I think:

Love everything Mara! You will rock this alt. Also feel free to visit my website free water damage repair. Haha.
ReplyDeleteYou look cute! You definitely deserve the Alt Summit Best Dressed award. I've been borrowing from my husband's closet, too, as a way to fend off the cold, arctic blast that is freezing all us East Coast ladies. To Mich -- Mara posts about her lipstick here: http://www.ablogaboutlove.com/2011/05/beauty-drawer.html and here: http://www.ablogaboutlove.com/2012/03/3-beauty-tips-for-spring.html Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteOh Mara. You are SO BEAUTIFUL.
ReplyDeleteSomeone just mentioned Alt so I thought I'd check if you're going. You will rock it! People will just blossom when they see you. xoxoxo

HI !! That was so fun to join that class for a second. Natalie was so cute to call me over. I was wearing the chambray top and the navy circle skirt. Good luck with your blogging endeavors!!
DeleteI love your outfits. You are beautiful. You asked what we thought so here it is. I mean this in the nicest of ways. We work very hard with out Young Women to help them understand the importance of being modest in their dress. Having skirts that come to their knees is one of them. The other is that leggings don't make your skirt any longer. It's in the EFY rule book. I have to say that I was disappointed to see that some of your skirts are short and the lace one, while totally gorgeous, is not modest. I have a hard time saying it because I feel like I am being critical but I realize that you have a heavy influence on young women in our church. While none of us is perfect, I know we are being watched. I know that women in our church watch the way you dress.
ReplyDeleteAnd this is what makes life so beautiful! The amazing gift of agency that we are given. I mean, that's the whole point, right?
DeleteYou may not think Mara's apparel is "modest"... and you may be "disappointed" to see her choice(s) of skirts and leggings, but she is a grown woman and as such, is using her fine personal intellect to make these sort of choices.
I think it's very sad that she felt the need to come on here and clarify her slip length because people tried to make her feel guilt or shamed. Is this really what we are about? Jumping at the chance to point out the so-called disappointments of others? I'm sorry but I felt your comment is precisely what you said it was- very critical.
Mara is a good woman... anyone reading this blog knows that... and I'm willing to bet that most people didn't even notice the length of her dress and the lack of a slip. Sometimes I think being a "good woman" goes so much deeper and further than a hemline.
You are so beautiful, love your hair! It was really lovely meeting you at alt! So embarrassed I thought you were someone else haha, happy accident, I will definitely be reading often!
ReplyDeletexo, Caytlyn
Love your outfits Mara! You look so cute! When I read the comment about your skirts and dresses not being modest, I had to go back and take a second look. I can not understand what Jocelyn was talking about! Sorry Jocelyn! You look like a lady in every outfit, modest and very classy! It doesn't look to me like you are putting your body on display in an inappropriate way or anything! Just my opinion, but I really don't see how any of these outfits are immodest. I am confused!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! Thanks for putting yourself out there!
- Andi :)
the reason why jocelyn and another commenter said something about modesty is because they know that mara is l.d.s. (a mormon) and has been to the temple. people who have been to the temple wear special garments under their clothing and the garments go down to the knee. the lace dress mara was wearing in the picture couldn't be worn with garments because they would show through the lace. i'm a big fan of this blog but if i'm being honest i would have to say that i was disappointed to see this as well. jo
DeleteThank-you for the support!
DeleteIS this a blog about LOVE or your CLOSET. Stay on target!
ReplyDeleteHi All - a note about the lace dress...I realize some of my readers are concerned about the length of the slip. I actually had a longer slip but for the quick snap shots at home, the longer slip did not make it into the photo. Sorry about that!
ReplyDeleteThis pin from pinterest made me think about all the comments regarding the length of your dress: http://pinterest.com/pin/7670261837570972/
