A Really Good Birthday

It’s my birthday as I start this post.  I shouldn’t be writing on my birthday, but I can’t help it.  I just feel too happy.

My birthday (Friday) began with my husband snuggling me up in the morning (he always gets up earlier than me so he is usually my alarm clock, which I love!)  And before we got going for the day, we said a little prayer together.  He just expressed so much gratitude for me.  Is there anything better to hear as a wife?  (I really, really think that prayer – or any equivalent – is worth gold in marriage….In case you missed this post, I wrote all about that here:  How to Keep a Marriage GLUED)

Later Danny said…”Um, you might want to get ready for the day, just in case.”  🙂  A few minutes later, our buzzer rang.  My dear friends came over to surprise me with a breakfast date.  It could not have been more wonderful to just catch up with friends and have a delicious brunch in Brooklyn (especially with some of my favorite kids ever.)

Later I met up with Danny for dinner.  But just before, he presented me with a gift that my parents had sent along for me.  He said I would really, really like it.  I opened the package and gasped!  I knew exactly what it was…some clothes that my grandmother wore as a Rodeo Queen in Bisbee, AZ.  In fact, I got the very outfit that is pictured here in this photograph of my grandmother (we actually used this photo for some Harvey branding).  I couldn’t believe it.

Here are the pants!  They fit perfectly and have pleats and are made of a very, very heavy silk satin.  I hope I can figure out what to wear with these in time for Alt Summit.

For dinner we went to Rose Water in Park Slope, the same place we went two years ago for Danny’s birthday.  To surprise Danny then, I had our awesome waitress bring out his gift with our appetizers (I arranged this prior).  She gave me my appetizer and then said to Danny, “And…for you…”  and then gave Danny a plate with his gift on it.  It was so fun.  (She was the best actress!)

So on my birthday, we were sitting there just chatting and the waitress brought out some bread (she was the same waitress).  She said something like, “I know you’re gluten free, but here’s some bread for Danny.”  It looked like a lot of bread in there.  Like – probably many yummy varieties and probably steaming hot.  I couldn’t wait for Danny to open the napkin so I could see all the bread in there that I was missing out on.  And then…he opened the napkin.  And there was a little gift for me from him!  I was so surprised I think everyone heard me gasp and kind of squeal.  hahaha.  I just couldn’t believe it and certainly didn’t expect it.  I turned and the entire staff and kitchen were all watching and giddy.  SO cute.

So…birthday surprises are the best.  I highly recommend them.  🙂 🙂

Hope you all have a happy Monday!

P.S.  I also got to attend a baby shower over the weekend.  My Brooklyn friends have such great taste and always give the BEST gifts.  Since I know nothing about the latest baby stuff, I had to document a few things.  Here are some of my favs…

Eleanor the Bear (available at Pink Olive in Park Slope).  We were all seriously dying over this.
Now I Am Big.  This book was adorable.  Anyone who appreciates graphic design would LOVE this book.  The illustrations are in the style of vintage screen prints, with imperfections in color and texture.  They were so cute that they’re on my wish list.
Whale Organic Swaddling Blanket.  Apparently lots of moms love these!

May I ask, do you have any “go-to” gifts for baby showers?

Happy Birthday Mara! I think the best birthday magic is feeling loved and appreciated 🙂 I'm so glad you were able to feel both!

once i went to a co-ed baby shower (a bun in the oven BBQ, so clever!) and i got them something off their registry…plus a 6-pack of mountain dew because the couple loves it. i also (as per my usual tactic) bought an irrelevant greeting card…which i usually edit to make them funnier (i should probably write greeting cards professionally), but i let this one from the generic "congratulations" section stay as is: "I just want to say congratulations. All your hard work has paid off." Which is totally appropriate for a pregnant couple, right? 😉

Happy Birthday! I love swaddlers too. But I think one of my favorite baby things is a white noise machine. They RULE. I swear that is why my kids are good sleepers! My 4 year old still sleeps with his, and will probably sleep with on the rest of his life! http://www.amazon.com/Conair-SU1W-Sound-Therapy-Silver/dp/B000F54AN8/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&srs=2529187011&ie=UTF8&qid=1358189205&sr=1-1&keywords=conair+sound+machine

Mara, you are such amazing woman! Happy, happy (late) birthday! I'm so glad it was wonderful, because you completely deserve it. And, thank you so much for coming to my shower! It was such a hard week for me preparing to leave all my friends in Brooklyn- and I really can't describe how happy it made me to be surrounded by all of you guys on my very last night. Love you all, and miss you already!

Happy Birthday! My husband and I never surprise each other because we both get so excited about it that we have to share! So it's kind of an ALMOST surprise. It's cute.

Those pants ROCK. What a stellar gift!

    Happy Birthday!
The muslin swaddling cloths/ blankets are good especially fo a new bubby in warm weather. I usually make some booties or give a cute outfit.

Happy late birthday! I like to give Sophie the Giraffe. It was started in France many years ago, but babies really seem to love this little giraffe. My baby boy lights up when he sees her laying on a blanket. He crawls right over to her and chews happily for a while.

I think we were meant to be friends and I think Alt made it happen. First, we are both Capricorns and our birthdays are only one day apart. Also, I love that pic of your grandmother. I don't know if your grandmother actually lived in Bisbee AZ, but my Grandparents moved to Wilcox in 1951 (about 30 miles from Bisbee. I showed my mom the pic of your Grandmother and she says it looks totally familiar like she saw that when she was growing up. So yeah, meant to be. I hope you have safe travels and it was so great meeting in person! You rocked the panel! I heard so much positive feedback. Please stay in touch!
