The Cottage

Danny and I have been dreaming of buying a tiny cottage in the Hudson Valley, just outside the city.  One with a garden, a little greenhouse, a fireplace, stacks of cozy blankets, a big table for dinners and game nights with family and friends.  Wouldn't that be amazing?  We dream of eating fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, playing bocce ball on our very own lawn, sitting around a fire pit at night with friends, and having a little home base for hiking and fishing.  Oh, it's a fun dream.  :)  And now we talk about it so often that I feel we'll make it happen somehow.  Our friends are in on this, too, and want one as well...perhaps we can buy some land together!  Can't you just see it?  Brooklynites heading to their cottages on the weekends to make applesauce and can pickles and let the kids play outdoors until dark...

Here are a few pics that inspire me.  And - I have to share this downright breathtaking website I came across.  It's called...eeks...Cabin Porn.   I promise it's safe to click on it.  :)  They show photos from all over the world of the most amazing, breathtaking, unique cabin dwellings.  I've never seen anything like it.  And for anyone else wanting to head to the Hudson Valley or the Catskills, here's a great article from the NY Times about city dwellers getting a second home.

You can see that the interior of this place is 100% move-in ready.
Yep, wouldn't need to change a thing.  :)
(House to Home...a NY barn conversion.)

I think I might want to try blogging from that room.  (Allandale House by William O'Brien)

I'd take a fireplace over a parking space in the city.  That's saying a LOT. :)

Tuck, tuck, tuck, tuck.  (Meggie Lynne)

I bet this place comes with fireflies.  (Kevin Shea Adams)

A couple of tricycles are in order here.  (Dwell)

I would totally want to make tin-foil dinners in that.  (BHG)

Perfection.  (Houzz)

We are totally ok with small spaces around here.  :)  And lawns.

Come on over for our annual clam bake! (leastofthese)

I bet that ladder goes to something awesome.  (RUM)

I don't need the rest of the house.  Just that room.  (Our Little Big House)

Such a perfect combination of colors.  (habitually chic)

Brooklyn friends, let's co-op these things and all move in!  (Clara Orh)

You can see the rest of my cottage inspiration that I've been ridiculously collecting here.  :)

What do you dream of doing someday?  And, have you ever had a little country home or cabin?  I'd love to hear what it's like.  Did it fulfill the dream you had in mind? (and if you are a New Yorker and you pulled this off, I would LOVE to hear any suggestions, tips, etc.)

  1. I swoon for cottages!! That is my dream home. The husband wants something bigger... maybe meet in the middle when the time comes :) And I totally just sent that Cabin Porn link to my sister so thanks! You guys are awesome.

  2. My in-laws live in the Hudson Valley and I absolutely loooove going up there to visit! It's gorgeous. I had never known that kind of beauty till I moved to the northeast. I hope your cottage dreams come true!!

  3. This is one of my dreams, too! I totally have a "cabin retreat" Pinterest board and everything! This is lovely :)

  4. We just inherited a cottage we want to sell once probate is over. In Connecticut next to a state forest. On a pond, water wheel on the barn, waterfall over small dam, island in pond with gazebo, arched bridges over brook, 5+ acres, tiny house, 2 bdrms, 1 bath. Nice neighbors (we live about a half mile down the road). I don't know if I post as anonymous, if you can respond directly to me or not, so I'll check back to this posting to see if you are interested. Then I'll send photos. You will fall in love with it. MC

  8. In response to your first question "What do you dream of doing some day?", my husband and I decided that we'd live in New Zealand for a year. We loved it so much that we ended up moving here for good. It was a dream that we didn't want to pass up or wait til we were too old to enjoy it. Throw caution to the wind and go for it. Get that cabin in the woods ... there is something soothing and healing about nature when living in a city:)

    Love your pictures!

  9. wow love these photos so much.. especially the allandale house!
