Love Announcements

The Clinique shoot went really well!  At least they said it did.  :)  I was out and about getting some stuff done.  But before I left, I snapped this little shot.  I can't wait to see their final pics.

These three guys directing the shoot are some of the geniuses at Case, an ad agency.  Case was founded by some long time friends here in New York.  I knew them before they started their company.  In fact, I just realized that at different times, I have lived in the same building as three of the guys who work there (by the way, nothing is cooler in New York than being able to pull off living in the same building as your friends.  It has happened to me 7 times with 7 different couples!  :)  Anyway, it has just been remarkable to see them start from scratch and create an extremely successful agency.
I'm always amazed at the amount of equipment that is needed for a photo shoot!  This place was PACKED with people and equipment.

And - a few love announcements....(starting with my favorite!):

-One woman says, "I've started telling my daughters I'm beautiful."  (I couldn't love this more!!)

-I can't wait to see all my family!  Every single one of the Papas will be together for Christmas.  That's quite a feat as we are spread out between London, Chicago, Portland, Medford, Mesa, and New York!  I've been thinking of stocking stuffers for all of them and I think it might include these.

-Are you going to be in New York for the holidays?  See here for my NYC HOLIDAY GUIDE from last year.  We're talking Dyker Heights, the best Santa in NYC, the best tamales, and the Rockettes (they are ah-mazing...seeing them will make you wish you grew up taking dance classes :).  And - one of my favorites on the list...the live nativity on the Upper East Side (a must!)

-Three surprising vegetables that are in season right now.  (I am always trying to work in more vegetables.  Tonight it was sauteed spinach with heirloom tomatoes, garlic, basil, and sausage from my favorite little Italian market in Park Slope, Russo's.)

-I already got my Christmas present!  And it's for blogging, actually.  You can't imagine how slow my computer has been for quite a while.  So Danny got me a new computer.  I feel so spoiled.  But, oh man - I needed it.
The same night we got the computer we did see Santa.  Though he was off duty.  Glad Danny could fill in :)

And, here are a few families/individuals trying to use the web to do something amazing.  I'm happy to support them:

-In case you need Christmas cards.
-A spotlight on a sweet little boy that is in need of a family.
-A Thanksgiving tragedy, and how we can help.

What are your plans this weekend?  Weekends in December always seem to be full of something good.  Hope that's the case for you.   We'll be enjoying our very clean apartment (thanks to the shoot) and hopefully hanging out with some good friends.

XO,

Mara

  1. As a lucky mom of an adopted darling with Down Syndrome, I have nothing but love for Reece's Rainbow. Bravo to you for spreading the joy. Adopting a child with special needs is the greatest Christmas gift you could EVER hope for!!! (Even better than a new Mac, and I LOVE my Macs!) ;-)

    2. Mara, you're so cute. Thanks. You know, Danny and I corresponded about clean up for Hurricane Sandy around Thanksgiving. I sent my daughter and hubby out there thanks to your post with the video. Talk about inspiring. I think they missed working with you guys by one bus. I think you guys ended up at Coney and they were at the Rockaways.

  4. my weekend plans include a) driving directly to a tree lot after work and strapping a perfectly quaint little pine tree to the top of my car, and b) convincing my roommates that the tree SHOULD have tinsel on it. i already made a ruffle burlap tree skirt and i think rugged and glam is a delicious combo. (think outfits with combo boots and sequins...it works, right?)

    1. I have always wanted a tree on top of my car. haha. Hasn't happened yet. We have low key christmases but I am guessing when we have children I might be more inclined to go all out. And YES -agree with you on the rugged and glam. :)

  5. I've always wondered if models were actually wearing the brand they were being paid to advertise in ads and such. And based on your photo, the answer is NO! It seems that the makeup artist was using every brand OTHER than Clinique. Interesting!

    1. Hey anon! Great observation. Well, it turns out the shoot was not for the make-up itself, but for some internal branding purposes. I'm guessing companies use their own make-up when doing shoots specifically for the make-up. But it would be interesting to know how that all plays out.

  6. Also, a little writing tip for you - only use an an apostrophe for the possessive or when combining two words, NOT when you're using the plural. So, it's "papas," NOT "Papa's." When something is plural, you just add an "s" on the end. When it's possessive - like that is papa's shirt - you use an apostrophe. When it's possessive but involving multiple people, the apostrophe is after the s... so if you're talking about a house belonging to 5 brothers you'd write "that's the brothers' house." The only other time you use an apostrophe is when combining two words like this: "Papa's coming tomorrow" is short for "Papa is coming tomorrow. Don't use an apostrophe for the plural!

    1. All that for a typo? Yikes. Maybe you're trying to be nice, but it sounds a little condescending (I'm pretty sure that's how I'd explain it to my 4th grader, not a grown woman). I'm guessing she knows the rules, but like all of us, makes a mistake every now and then and doesn't catch it before publishing it for everyone to see.
