I Can’t Believe This Post is About Lube

all natural lube

OK – I kinda can’t pass on sharing some good tips with you guys.  If I discover something really great, you are bound to hear about it…apparently, even if it’s lube.  Haha.  Oh my.  You can stop reading now if you’d like.  🙂

Well, we recently heard about using….Coconut Oil.
(I don’t know…is it just me or is it fun to try something new? 🙂

Well, thumbs up, guys!

Here’s the scoop:

1.  It’s organic and natural.  No yucky chemicals, parabens, alcohol, glycerin, or artificial fragrances. (Read more about why it’s best to avoid these things, which are found in mainstream lubes.)

2.  You won’t mind having it on any part of your body.  🙂

3.  It tastes good (!) and smells good (!)

4.  It moisturizes your skin…and can double as a massage oil (you guys!)

5.  It stays on in water…so…um…keep a little jar of this handy in the shower, too. 🙂

6.  It lasts a very long time.  You likely will not need to reapply.

7.  It starts out solid (at least in the colder months) but it will soften immediately when it’s in your hand.

8.  It even has anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties to keep health issues at bay.

9.  It’s less expensive, by far.

10.  It does not get sticky (you’re welcome).

See what I mean?  Have I convinced you?  🙂  Oh yes, for maximum health properties, get an organic, virgin, unrefined coconut oil like this one.   AND, get yourself a non-descript little jar to keep in the bedroom, otherwise you might feel like you’re about to saute vegetables.  haha.  I got these jars at Ikea (in the kitchen section).  They come in a pack of two.  Perfect…cause you’ll need one for the shower, too.   🙂

coconut oil lube

OK, lube recommendation concluded.

Back to your lovely day.  🙂

P.S.  A little friendly reminder:  like any oil based product, don’t use coconut oil with latex!  🙂

P.P.S.  Do you know of any other all natural lubes?

It's also sperm-friendly. We use it instead of lubes like Pre-Seed. Just saying'. 🙂

    • mara December 4, 2012 at 7:07 pm - Reply

Yes! I read that it's sperm friendly, too!

    • tamerajane December 5, 2012 at 12:19 am - Reply

That's good to know, and was my first question! I was using Yes Baby from the UK (no parabens, etc) but it's spendy and hard to get here in the US.

    • Anonymous December 7, 2012 at 1:58 am - Reply

Great to know….and much cheaper than some of those pricey, sperm friendly lubes. A little sad to see that there are so many immature people out there…..they are probably the ones who need this post the most 😉

If you need lube is somethin' a missin'? Or maybe early menopause? Have you mentioned this to your O&G?

    • Anonymous December 4, 2012 at 11:35 pm - Reply

A whaaat? Everyone I know uses lube. All ages…and ESPECIALLY newlyweds 😉

    • Sarah December 7, 2012 at 12:50 pm - Reply

I have to agree with Anonymous #1. I haven't used lube til about a month after my wedding a couple years ago.

    • Erin December 31, 2012 at 9:12 pm - Reply

No; even normal courses of life can find you needing it. Any kind of hormonal change; among the biggest culprits of dryness, pregnancy and breastfeeding. As long as either of those are happening, dryness may be an issue (especially with breastfeeding).

I love this photo. So cute!

I suppose you might have put up a flag to warn the single-and-wanting-to-remain-chaste readers what was coming. Even with the title, it took me a few seconds to figure out what you were writing about. I thought it had something to do with cars. I hope that married folks aren't offended by this. It could indicate they have a problem.

Thanks. I might try this idea someday. I don't like the sticky in KY, but haven't found anything better in 40+ years.

Yes, we are still at it.

Not offended!!! In fact, glad for a new option and that it is a "healthy" alternative. Love your ability to talk about a sensitive subject in such a non-embarrassing and humorous way. We all need suggestions on the "don't talk about in public" real life stuff!

    • mara December 4, 2012 at 8:28 pm - Reply

thanks so much, Amber! 🙂 Glad to hear it.

I'm pretty sure lube is a common necessity for most couples. Everyone I talked to about this sensitive subject when my husband and I were about to get married said that lube was the way to go (and that was quite a few couples… including some friends of ours who had been married a month before).

I loved this post! Great tips, and I'm thankful to know of a healthy alternative. I hate that sticky stuff. And honestly, standing in front of the lube selection that is strategically placed in a wide open area of the Walmart pharmacy so everyone and their dog sees you is not my idea of fun. But I'm okay with buying coconut oil! We already have a bunch! Flawless post, Mara!

    • mara December 4, 2012 at 7:09 pm - Reply

haha – the lube aisle. Oh my. Yes, much easier to pick out a coconut oil. thanks for this.

      Dude. You've got me laughing.

  14. Anonymous December 4, 2012 at 7:08 pm - Reply

Oh, people–using lube doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong! Have ya tried it just for fun? If you had, you'd know why Mara is recommending it.

But count among the reasons of something being "wrong"–women's bodies change as they age. It's beautiful and natural, and sometimes a little help is needed in the lube department. It does NOT mean she isn't attracted to her man! This is life. Welcome to it.

    • mara December 4, 2012 at 7:11 pm - Reply

haha – thanks for pointing all this out so perfectly! 🙂 And yes, certainly worth having some just for fun – no matter one's age, etc.

Do you know if coconut oil can be used on condoms without weakening them for those of us who are NOT trying to get pregnant? I think I remember learning that some oils can weaken condoms and encourage breakage. Otherwise, I'm thrilled to know of this affordable, healthy, natural option!

    • mara December 4, 2012 at 8:26 pm - Reply

I wouldn't use any oil based product with condoms!

This post is a perfect example of why I follow your blog. Because it's real. You don't pretend to live in this perfect barbie wonderland. And you have a way of delivering things like this in a fun (completely non-offensive) way. Keep 'em coming! 🙂 And yes, I also am offended that people are offended. Geez!

Quick questions… what about clean up? and oil on sheets?

    • Lark December 5, 2012 at 4:27 am - Reply

I was wondering about that too!! Does it leave oily stains on sheets? Maybe best used just in the shower?

    • Sarah December 5, 2012 at 5:39 am - Reply

I've never noticed any oil stains on our sheets. The nice thing about it is that because it is a solid (unless it is really hot) it is easy to get the right amount and it does not run everywhere like other oils.

I just bought coconut oil for my hair (amazing by the way, so so soft, but if you try it, make sure to shampoo twice while washing it out). So I keep mine in the bathroom anyway….good to know it's other uses;)

It's funny that people are offended. And we wonder why there are so many issues around sex within the LDS culture.

  30. Anonymous December 5, 2012 at 10:06 am - Reply

I think a lot of the comments just show how insecure our society can be when talking about sex in a healthy way. There are not enough role models on tv/internet/radio/whatever that talk about sex in a healthy, happy, loving, consensual way, free from so many of the negative expecations and stereotypes. I like this blog for the simply life lessons it teaches, I tend to shy away from it after overly relgious posts, but I am always impressed on how graceful, mature and respectful your posts can be about sex and relationships.

    • Sharlee December 5, 2012 at 11:39 am - Reply

Agree!! Although, I definitely like the religious posts, too. I don't shy away from them, but I agree with your observations on how insecure our society is with sex as a whole AND with the way Mara always addresses it!

  31. Anonymous December 5, 2012 at 11:49 am - Reply

I must be a lucky, lucky girl, my hubby definitely ticks all the boxes (no pun intended), takes his time and knows what he is doing. I definitely do NOT need the lube. I shall congratulate him tonight, with some lubeless love. And people who are offended by a lube post – your were warned!

    • Anonymous December 6, 2012 at 1:39 am - Reply

It is a big and a common mistake to think that sex aids are only for people who have problems or people who are abnormal. Yes, lube and other sex aids can be helpful when there are problems, such as low lubrication due to age or health issues. BUT, sex aids are also for FUN!!! Try them out. Don't act like they are weird or taboo or just for "other people." Lube is fun even if your body makes enough itself. Vibrators are fun even if your partner is satisfaction enough. Other toys are fun too even if you're having fun already – consider it ways to enhance what's already good (or what could be improved).

Fact – this is awesome. I loved this post and full intend on using this when I am married even if my wife does not "need" it. Cheers to being educated.

Sex is healthy and great! We do our children a disservice by raising them to think it's naughty or bad or taboo. There's nothing crass about an informative post. I'm single and I'm grateful for info to tuck away for later!

I've been using coconut oil for years and love it! I'm so happy to see it starting to catch on! Aside from that, I just wanted to give you yet another affirming "well done." Nothing to be offended by here, not by a long shot.

  38. LM December 6, 2012 at 3:40 pm - Reply

I never thought of using it to saute vegetables. Sounds delicious!
Seriously, though, add breastfeeding women to the list of those who could use a little coconut oil, although the incompatibility with latex is a drawback.

  39. Dominique December 7, 2012 at 12:26 am - Reply

Hmmm, what happens when one develops a Pavlovian response from using coconut oil for sex… and we bring out a platter of those delicious coconut macaroons?

  40. Anonymous December 7, 2012 at 1:36 pm - Reply

Wow – way to make an inference into my "I don't need lube" post. I am happy for other people to lube up until they slide off into the North Pole, we just don't need it. Lucky us – how about just being happy for us?
Don't be defensive, that will just make some think you don't know how to make a woman lubricate naturally (which admittedly takes a certain level of skill and attention) and we will feel sorry for you. Unless you are moving into a non-naturally lubricating part of the anatomy, which may need a whole new post? Are we being naive? Are people referring to the other side????
Remember that lovely saying – along the lines of – to make an assumption about me, just makes a fool of you?
If you and/or your wife need lube – go for it I say. We just don't need it, and our knowledge of the female anatomy allows us to understand why that is. We feel incredibly lucky about this. However, we are very happy for those who need it, so please go forth and lube up – no judgment, it just makes us extra, extra happy with our marriage…

Loved this post and cannot BELIEVE people were offended? Seriously? Thanks for the tip, I've never thought to use coconut oil. I've heard so many good things about it, not just for lube either. The Wonder Oil, apparently. 🙂

Sex is wonderful and awesome. We're newly married and wish we had more straight-forward, positive, helpful information to turn to. You have to admit, info's a little scarce. So thank you for sharing.

I can't believe people are offended by this!?

Like someone mentioned, it's not like you're giving a crash course on how to skin an animal.

Secondly, you ARE married, so anyone who doesn't agree with sex before marriage, shouldn't be upset that this is something you do NOW.

And lastly, it's not like you're giving details about your sex life or being 'classless' (as one terribly mean person put it), it's simply a recommendation and a HEALTHY one.

Bottom line? I like it. Keep up the GREAT GREAT GRRRREAT writing AND recommendations! xo

I'm shocked that people are offended…and I think it's kind of ridiculous and insensitive of people to brag that "they don't need it" and imply that if you are skilled in bed you never need lube. Good for you, but some things are beyond our control and no one needs to feel inadequate or flawed if our body doesn't quite work like we want it to. I personally can't wait to try coconut oil, yet another good use for it! Thanks for the post.
