As the days go by, the people in need are becoming even more in need. There is great desperation being felt by so many and we need to help.
*Note: there is a gas shortage. Please walk or ride a bike when possible.
1. THE RED HOOK INITIATIVE is collecting specific items for Red Hook residents who are still without power and running water and will be for several days more (Red Hook is a Zone A area). We are told that these folks are in great need.
Specifically they are collecting: water, toilet paper, paper towels, wipes in small packages, diapers, paper towels, band-aids, aspirin, inhalers, 6 individual coolers filled with ice for families who need to store insulin, flashlights (ideally loaded with batteries), batteries, aluminum foil, matches, and tons of plastic bags (like from the supermarket).
Drop off locations for the Red Hook Initiative:
767 Hicks Street (at their location in Red Hook)
343 Court Street at the Mormon Church in Carroll Gardens on FRIDAY BETWEEN 12 PM & 5 PM. (It's at the corner of Union and Court Street). Drop-offs will be taken promptly to the Red Hook Initiative.
You can also donate funds directly to the Red Hook Initiative here.
2. CBE (CONGREGATION BETH ELOHIM) is need of volunteers to prepare meals today (THURSDAY)
They also need donations to cover food costs. Donate on their website.
Volunteers should go to 274 Garfield Place in Park Slope. They also have a drive for candles, batteries, flashlights, water, non-perishables for Red Hook shelters. Drop off bins are outside their building.
3. HURRICANE SHELTERS
There two shelters we are aware of located at Brooklyn Tech High School (29 Fort Greene Place) and the Park Slope Armory (361 15th Street) that need volunteers. Both shelters are housing flood victims, especially the elderly, and volunteers are needed to distribute food, handle administrative tasks, and comfort residents. If you are able to assist, simply walk in to the shelter during these hours and work for as long as you can.
4. DUMBO, BROOKLYN
Swiss Miss is awesome for organizing some efforts there. Please help them if you can!
THANKS, EVERYONE! IF YOU KNOW OF OTHER WAYS TO SERVE, PLEASE WRITE IN!
