Parents for 3 nights

We hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day weekend!
Danny and I had quite a unique (& wonderful) weekend.  I have not yet mentioned what we’ve been up to.  You see these two little cutie pies?  They are the son and daughter of some of our best friends here in Brooklyn.  Danny and I watched them for the weekend while their parents were out of town.   🙂  🙂  They’re sleeping in the next room as I write this.

Kind of crazy that being responsible for kids is something we never have really experienced.  But, we’re glad to fill in as their Brooklyn family.  It’s actually really special to be that kind of friends with someone.  And, we’re so grateful for that.  We love this family so much.

AND, these two kids happen to be as sweet and darling and good as can be.

Here are a few new things for us:

-A two-year old who wakes us up each morning by calling Danny’s name as loud as he can from the crib. (It actually makes getting up early worth a big smile.)

-A 4-year old who randomly calls out, “I love you, Mara.”  Or “Danny, I love you.”  🙂  🙂  🙂

-Mara being on time to church (when kids wake you up so early on a Sunday morning, somehow there’s plenty of time for getting ready, breakfast, & hanging out…who knew!?! 🙂

-Lots of smiles and laughs at church from all the parents who were watching us with two kids on the bench.

-A 4-year old who (after I quickly put her on the public toilet seat at the park) said…”My mom knows about public restrooms.  She always puts down toilet paper on the seat first.”  Oops!

-A handsome and clean little boy who somehow managed to get his hands covered in black dirt (in 1/2 a second) before we got into the car on the way to church (apparently he likes to rub down the hub cap.  🙂

-A blow out (just one.  Not bad. 🙂  Though I had to call for Danny for back-up.  Oh man, at this point it definitely takes two Kofoeds for those blow outs.  How do you guys do it?  Glad we were home for that one and that we could get that little one straight to the bath!

-(2) kids who I think ate more than Danny and I.  haha.  We couldn’t keep up!  We’re not used to having such regular (& long) meal times.  🙂

-Going to sleep at night and actually thinking, “I can’t wait until morning so we can see the kids!”

-Seeing Danny make the kids laugh non-stop; and make them rice and beans; and avocado shakes.

WE LOVE YOU, M & L!  And somehow, they love us back.  It really is one of the best feelings in the world.

For any of you without kids yet, do you like watching other peoples’ kids?  Is it a good experience for you, or the opposite?  I’m so curious!!

Hope you all have a wonderful and SHORT work week.  (Isn’t that always the best little realization after a holiday?  Only 4 days to go until another weekend 🙂

See you all back here soon.

Danny & Mara

P.S.  These same friends recommended the best documentary for us to watch while at their house.  They said it was their favorite documentary of the year.  It’s called “Yiro Dreams of Sushi” (see link for trailer) and it’s about a master sushi chef in Tokyo who could be the best sushi chef who ever lived.  His restaurant is in a Toyko subway station.  We LOVED the film.  (It’s available on Netflix.)  And yes, today we went and got sushi.

I loved this: Going to sleep at night and actually thinking, "I can't wait until morning so we can see the kids!" It made me tear up a bit.

I remember when we were going through fertility treatments and our desire to be parents was nearly overwhelming we had a similar experience. We had our 2 year old nephew for a couple of nights. I loved, LOVED hearing him call from the crib for us. I also remember the excitement knowing we'd be waking up to a toddler.

Glad you had such a fun weekend… Looking forward to the day when I read about the little Kofoeds you are waking up to.

My husband and I watched that same documentary last week on netflix.
Well it seems like you had a very fun and busy weekend. I always love watching my friends kids for them when they need a date night or a day to them selves. Kids can be very entertaining.

i love the "mom knows" comment. so cute.

my husband and i have been married for 20 years and we don't have kids, but love watching our friends kids. it's so fun to be the "fun" parents. it's my favorite kind of parenting so far.

I can't think of two people better suited for the job 🙂

I watched my two-year-old cousin overnight last night. First time for me even after 1.5 years of nannying and lots of babysitting experience.

My favorite part: this morning when he said "Patrick out of crib!" He wasn't out already, just letting me know he wanted to get out 🙂 What a cutie pie. I loved it and slept better than I thought I would- I was slightly nervous and worried that I might not sleep well!

Mara! What a sweet post. I remember the time you dropped everything to tend to my little kiddos when Grant was born– almost three years ago (can you believe it?) It was so nice to know that they were loved and watched over. You guys are amazing and I'm sure Ange and Spencer were beyond grateful to you both. MISS YOU my friend!!!

I love watching my niece and my nephew for overnight ears, it's especially a treat because they live so far away and it rarely happens. In fact, last weekend was the first time I got to keep my nephew, who is 3, ovnight and we had a BLAST. He was so sweet and when I told him the next day after brunch with his uncle and Grammy, that we were going to meet his dad, he said " Nooooo, I want to stay with you Jenn-Jenn". It was precious. I didn't want to give him back.
