Perhaps My Last Chance at Getting Pregnant – Naturally

For now, the moment has come.

All we can do is wait two weeks.

And if I don’t conceive, then we will move forward with IVF.  At least that’s what my fingers just typed.  I’m not excited about it.  But it’s probably time.  We’ll see how I feel in two weeks.

This has been an extraordinary 8-year journey.

I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  I’ve learned the greatest lessons of my life because of it.

Many have asked what I’ve tried.  Here ya’ll go – – the good, bad, and the stuff I can’t believe I’m including on this list.  🙂

-Charting.  Thermometers in my mouth.  (Was my mouth too dry/too cold?)  And in other places.  (Too warm now?  haha.)  Sheesh.  I don’t know if that ever worked out quite right.  I always had a shift, but overall my temps were always lower than low.  I have yet to find a doctor who seemed to care.

Books, books, books.

Chinese teas – from a Chinese pharmacy in Chinatown (hand delivered in vacuum pacs to my office in midtown 🙂

-Bye-Bye to Gluten and Dairy.  (Hello to flat stomach, clear skin and more energy.)

Acupuncture – by a lovely woman in Brooklyn…with the tiniest hands and the coziest office in a garden apartment of a brownstone.  At 911 Union St.  Around the corner from the studio I lived in on 9-11.   I will never forget that address.  Nor the healing experience it was to experience acupuncture.  (Even as my first marriage seemed quite uncertain at the time.)  I went forward with a wing and prayer that things would work out.  (They did 🙂

-Spiritual Healing – best thing I’ve ever done in my life.  I met one of the wisest women I’ve known, my second acupuncturist and more importantly, a spiritual healer who changed my life.  The momentum from that experience has not stopped.

Organic vegetables – by the box – delivered to my door.  (Though I’m liking the idea of local CSAs more.  I need to get on that.)

-Meditation.  You guys, this CD for fertility is AMAZING.  I love it so much and still listen to it often.  Many friends say they love it, too.  I think it was sooo healing.

-8 years of prenatal vitamins and loads of fish oil.

Fancy lubes.  🙂  Expensive ones.  Sheesh.

BodyTalk.  I can’t recommend this woman enough.  She’s in Manhattan and one of the most lovely people you’d ever meet.  I loooved my appointments with her.

-OV sticks galore.  And pregnancy sticks – until I gave up on both of them completely.  Even the 24 cent ones you can get from Amazon.  Cause I just stopped needing to know.  (Though I still wish I had known about those cheap ones back when anxiety was high and I was shelling out good money for those things.)

-Homeopathic drops from an infertility homeopathic guru in Orem, UT.  And those cute little pellets in blue vials from my wonderful PCP in Park Slope who also practices homeopathy.

-Clomid + rounds of IUIs.

-And, a psychic.  Yes, a psychic.  Someone highly recommended it and knew a good one.  Well, I did it.  Why not.  🙂

[can you tell there are few things I wouldn’t try?]  I’ll let you know if what she told me happens.  🙂

Happy Friday!

P.S.  You guys, the comments from yesterday just touched me so much.  They were the sweetest ever.  Something about what you all shared just hit me so hard – – all of those little things – – they’re all just LOVE.  Oh man, to think of a husband doing something sweet for his wife while he’s getting treated for cancer, or a wife who irons all her husbands shirt so he doesn’t have to worry about it, or a husband who keeps a list of things his wife wants and then over time gets all those things for her.  Gah.  I’m just dying over all that you said.  Thanks so much for sharing.  I’m adding to my list:  tickling Danny’s back before bed (he’s such a sucker for this.)

*ALSO –  Is our site having trouble uploading for anyone?  If so, we’re so sorry!  Someone mentioned it and we’re trying to get to the heart of the matter, but it would be helpful to know how many might be having an issue.  Thanks for your patience!

Oh my gosh. This post is a wealth of info for me. Thank you for sharing all of this – I identify with so much of it!

I have the "Is Your Body Baby-Friendly?' book; would you recommend the other 2? (To add to my already impressive collection? haha…) I also really like "Making Babies" by Sami David have have about 1/2 of it dog-eared.

A close friend who lived in Brooklyn has raved about Angela Le, and I couldn't believe when I saw her mentioned here! I am actually thinking about making an appointment with her even though I live in Massachusetts. I also have had a reading with a psychic via the phone (just for fun, really) and who knows if what she said will turn out to be right, but I felt a huge sense of relief afterwards. I would love to know who you saw, if you can share?

I am sending lots of good vibes your way and have my fingers crossed for you during these next 2 weeks. You are such an inspiration of positivity for me (I still have a LOT of work to do in that department!) and I am so thankful to you for sharing your trials with us.

I am praying for you, Mara! BIG PRAYERS! It seems so outrageous that an incredible woman like yourself, who seems so darn FIT to be an even more incredible mother, is having such a rough time getting positive results. But like you have said, this whole experience has changed and helped you become the strong and determined individual you are today. And it only expands from there in your favor… because the fact is, You WILL be a mother in this lifetime, one way or another, and that child will be a VERY blessed one, that's for sure. Big hugs.

Good luck with everything! This is quite a list. Some things I'm going to have to check out for sure! I hope that you have a baby in your arms soon.

I will keep you guys in my thoughts and prayers!! This little journey sure can be tough sometimes, huh? Right now we are on a little break (and actually on birth control which is uber ironic) to try and force cysts to go away. Sigh. But hopefully we can try again soon! You are an inspiration, and thank you for all these tips! I will have to look into them! 🙂

Regarding the low temperature thing, check out My average body temps went from 94.7 to 97.8 (waking up temps, bytheway). I've been healing by body from decades of diet and harmful mindsets. I'm hoping this change will bring about pregnancy.

Clearly you have tried a lot, just wanted to pass my 2 cents along.

    Hi Mara!
I loved reading over your list because it sounds so similar to mine…I had Native American Medicine Man on my list. Haha! He was actually amazing.

After several miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism & was put on Progesterone Suppositories- 200mg, 2x/day. Those did the trick for me, but then again I was struggling with staying (not getting) pregnant…that, and it was the Lord's timing.
It's funny, for years I would fervently pray for knowledge about what I could do or take to get pregnant. I felt like Heavenly Father, being all-knowing, would know how to help me. One morning, after pouring out my soul, the answer came "Be still and know that I am God." Wow, that was it for me. I surrendered completely- something I hadn't been able to do in all those years. Ironcially enough, I was pregnant the very next month. 🙂 Anyway, just thought I would share that with you!

    Hi Mara,
I so feel for you on this. I went through 7 years of unexplained infertility so I totally get it. We tried everything too. I was able to get pregnant on my first IVF even though the doctor painted a completely bleak picture for us. None of my embryos looked great but he implanted the best three. I was so shocked when I actually was pregnant. I so hope this works for you. Even though I don't know you or Danny I feel like I do through your blog. I know you will be wonderful parents and I really hope this works for you. It's all so hard and trying but on the other side of it you realize that everything has a way of happening when it's supposed to. I had so many pre-conceived ideas of how my life would be that I had to just let go of. It all made my husband and I closer and we are so, so thankful for our daughter. I'll be thinking about you guys.
    Good luck!

i hope it goes the way you want and wish.
but if it doesnt, we know its gods plan and you will get what your heart desires.

Good luck with your two week wait! I just finished my first cycle of IVF and I find out if it worked Monday. Trying to stay positive and hoping for the best!

I wish the best for you! After two years of trying many of the things you mentioned, we opted for IVF and it worked the first time. Our twins are now 2 and I rarely think about infertility anymore. Infertility was a very difficult experience for me, and one that I did not handle with the same grace that you have. I know things will work out for you and danny no matter what happens.

No problems loading for me ever.

My mother-in-law struggled with infertility for 10 years… But they kept trying and finally got pregnant! Then ended up having 5 kids! So there is hope!

  19. Bri!!! June 30, 2012 at 4:06 am - Reply

Did you ever get the HSG? They don't know why, but it increases your chance of getting pregnant for a few months after the procedure, and it shows uterine abnormalities, and whether or not tubes are blocked. We got pregnant after the HSG using the drug Femara (similar to clomid, but actually worked for us where clomid did not). We were 2 weeks away from scheduling our IVF procedure when we found out we were pregnant! I am now holding the little miracle in my lap as I write this! What a journey! However you get your little ones here will all be worth it. GOOD LUCK!

    • Kathryn July 2, 2012 at 5:24 am - Reply

Bri, I think I have the exact same story at you! HSG, Femara, and then one last pregnancy test to make sure I wasn't wasting money moving forward with the infertility specialist and bam – a positive. I wish it could work for everyone, but will ever be thankful that was the secret formula for my body.

Our heart goes out to you and your husband. This is such a difficult journey for any couple trying to get pregnant (including myself!). Have you heard of Dr. Nolte and the Gianna Center for Women in Manhattan? They work mostly with women who have issues with infertility. She's wonderful.

The Gianna Center is wonderful and has worked for so many women!

Good luck to you Mara and Danny! We are all cheering for you.

We had three failed IVFs (still no children), which was difficult, but I have learned and continue to learn so much from this experience.

Thanks for doing what you do to raise infertility awareness and for your example of handling this experience with such grace.

Been there….done ALL OF THIS! (Minus the psychic…lol!! Never thought of that one! Haha) Good luck and i will keep you guys in my prayers!

We'll say some extra prayers for you and Danny. We have also been trying/hoping/praying for the last eight years and are facing IVF, too. We wish you the absolute best!!

I've just finished my first month on Clomid (blahhhh) and I'm scheduled for an HSG next Tuesday. We were able to get pregnant with our first as a total surprise almost 5 years ago. Then last summer I miscarried 2x and now seemingly I have just completely stopped ovulating. ::sigh:: I'm finding all of this very stressful and luckily my husband has been so very supportive. But still – it's hard. It's good to find others who are experiencing the same things for the support.

We've tried many of the same things 🙂 IVF for us starts in August. Best of luck to both of us!

Any update on the psychic yet? Did she mention twins?

I found your amazing blog because of your Manahattan restaurant blog post, we had our first IVF this past May-July too. Wasn't successful unfortunately, but we'll be back trying again after our trip to the NYC next week.

Kirrily – So….what the psychic told me didn't happen. Darn. She didn't mention twins. But she did mention a date. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way she said. Ha. Well, it was a fun bit of hope. IVF appt. is SOON! And GOOD LUCK with your next IVF. What a journey. xo
