Weekend Getaways

weekend getaway near new york
This time of year reminds me of our day trip to Beacon, NY on our first Valentine's Day together.
We were dating.  I surprised Danny with tickets to a modern dance performance taking place at Dia: Beacon, the country's largest modern art museum (highly recommended!)  We ended our day with walking through art galleries in the charming town.  It was glorious.

I am reminded now how great road trips or little weekends together can be as they create memories.  Too often as husband & wife, I think weekend getaways become a thing of the past due to schedules, kids & money.  But I say - if there's a will there's a way!  With winter upon us, why don't we all decide to plan some little getaways with our spouses?  (Wouldn't this cottage in Hudson, NY be amazing??  Ha!  I'm just dreaming here.)  No matter what it is, I think it's worth it to get something in the works!  Who's with me?

  1. I'm so with you! We'll celebrate 10 years this summer and haven't gone away for a weekend together since before we had kids. We're determined to this spring before baby #4 arrives!

  2. My husband and I try to do a weekend trip each year for our anniversary and it is such a wonderful time for us and has produced some incredible memories. Our mutual passion is food so we find a cheap hotel and then go all out eating scrumptious meals.
Also, the first thing I thought when I saw the pictures of this cabin was "That's Kiki's Delivery Service on the TV, the owners have good taste!" haha.

    2. There is a collectors box that you can buy, when I saw it I was practically drooling. It has 31 different movies/short clips. And it is totally worth it.

  3. My husband and I are all about the weekend getaways. Sometimes it is just us, but sometimes we do little family weekend getaways too and those are always so fun! One thing I love about my man is he is always up for anything. He will come home and I will have concocted this crazy scheme for a getaway and he always says "let's do it!" no matter how hairbrained my plan. We have never regretted any of them!

  4. i think we must have cabin fever. i'm dying for a little getaway, even if it's just a short train trip to nyc or a carride to amish country.

    1. I've been dying to take Danny to Amish Country. That's on the list as soon as the weather warms up. I have very fond memories of going there - eating with an Amish family - buying a whole back seat of vegetables for pennies - and buying canned jams and homemade pies from people's front yard stands. Oh man, I can't wait to go there.

  5. oh my goodness, if I went there I don't think I'd ever want to leave!
it seems impossible in this season of my life...small kids and my husband never wants to spend money on anything. I need to convince him that this is an investment in us!

  7. Mara,
I completely agree! Danny and have two girls (4 and a half and 16 months) so we need some time away and to ourselves. It is a tradition we started once our daughter Ellyanna was born. Thank goodness for grandparents who live close by and willingly watch the girls. We get to do this about every other year. So far we've had weekend trips to Washington DC, Hershey PA, and this past December we went to the Poconos PA at the Cove Haven Resort. It is much needed time to reconnect and spark up the flame. I always enjoy reading your posts and LOVE all your pictures. I am always learning from you two. You guys are so professional at this stuff.

  9. My husband and I are at the point where weekend getaways are rarely possible. Instead we try to connect with each other every day - find small ways to be One. We do have getaways planned from months and years in the future, though. One this summer, maybe, and one for 2013. It's nice to have a dream out there.

(Also, our kids are getting bigger, and they're super fun to take with us places. Since we don't have time to do both (just couple time AND family trips), usually we bring them along. It's a big world out there, and we want to show it to them!)

  10. I love the idea of a daily connection - my father ( a wise man) told us to stare at each other for 5 minutes a day. try it! it's hard! and it's also very sweet. the silence, and looking into the windows of the soul... i always have a few tiny tears from the love I feel for him.

twice a year we run away to a night in montauk, ny. we stay in a rustic cabin with a wood burning stove, where we can take our dog and look at the stars. it's a short walk to the beach where our pup can roam free on the beach before and after tourist season. if you are close by, it's called the hither house, and it's not expensive (awesome for montauk). in addition, you can bring and grill your own food! bonus for not having to go out to crazy hamptons / montauk restaurants.

another idea is living social adventures! you wouldn't believe how much fun these trips are. sometimes it's just a day trip to zipline, or a night trip for snow tubing, but recently, we packed our backpacks and hauled our gear to get on buses and go for a night of adult camp and white water rafting. they provided everything (except a tent and sleeping bags) for a very reasonable price.

i love weekend getaways! it's so surprising what you can do and see in a weekend to feel really refreshed. great post!
