A Very Memorable Weekend

What a weekend!

Danny & I have been dashing about here in New York & have had quite an exciting weekend.  We had so many blog related events & deadlines to pack into a few days, so it was also quite intense....but I felt incredibly in love with my husband through it all as we raced around the city in between commitments.  He is a gem, even under pressure.  And no matter what our schedule, he will be stopped in his tracks upon seeing the cutest dogs ever, as happened Friday night at the Madison Square Dog Park.  :)

Also, today (Feb. 13) Danny & I will be guests on BYU Radio!  The show is called Thinking Aloud and it will air on Classical89 KBYU-FM at 11 am and 8 pm MST.   And also on BYU Radio (Sirius XM 143) at 11:30 am and 5:30 pm MST.  The topic they want us to speak about is Choosing Happiness.  Maybe you know by now that this is certainly a topic we love to talk about.   :)

And, this weekend I had a visit by some of my oldest and dearest friends I've ever had.  Three women who used to live in Brooklyn (before they had babies & moved to real houses with yards & washing machines) came back to have a girls weekend.  I spent every moment I could with them eating amazing food, reminiscing around the neighborhood, staying up late, eating ridiculously good brunches, & going to Broadway (Mary Poppins charmed us all...it was so magical I even had a tiny tear :).  We laughed at seeing futons on the street (in the trash) and joked that back in the day, one of the husbands would have probably brought it off the street & up 3 floors to give it a new home in his living room.  We laughed about one friend's first apartment that was big enough to house a King Size bed, and nothing else.  You could lay on each side of it and touch the wall (though it did include a guest quarters - a small strip at the bottom of the bed where there was enough room for a sleeping bag.)  We laughed at bathrooms that were so tiny you had to stand in the bathtub to close the door.  Or kitchens that were so small that when all of us women were in there cooking a big Sunday meal together, our bums would be touching as we chopped vegetables on the counters.  And we laughed at a Valentine's surprise party that we planned for our husbands...complete with those tall Virgin Mary/Jesus candles in red, lining the ridiculously long hallway of one of the Brooklyn apartments (the candles later came in handy during the great East Coast Black-out of 2003 while we all sat in candlelight & ate popsicles out of the freezer before they melted.)  I wish I had photos.  But these were the days before we had digital cameras.  This is how far back I go with these dear women.

All weekend we felt so grateful for the friendships that we have.  What friends are your closest ones?  Are they ones you met as newlyweds, in college, as a new parent, or because of your children's friends?  I always hear that new moms bond together like nothing else.  I wonder how that will be for me as I'll be so much older than most new moms!

P.S.  A few love announcements...

-Don't forget to add a comment to the "Come Hither Haiku" post for a chance to have Koseli write a HAIKU for you for Valentine's Day!

-And see a little something I'm getting for Danny for Valentine's Day, which reminds me of our courtship :) (Danny, dear, you're not allowed to click the link! :)

  1. Once upon a time in 2008 I was a KBYU radio news reporter and wrote and reported my fair share of "Thinking Aloud" :) They are honored to get to interview you. If you speak to Wes, tell him Katie H from MN says "hi!"

  3. I jus want to say that I love this blog! I am here reading this from the beginning because of my sister. I am divorced and it has been a good two years for me in April of 2012 since I have been divorced. I love all your posts and how much you inspire me to be a better person. I too have come to love myself and have a relationship with my heavenly father that I have come to appreciate because of what I have been through.

There is this quote that I like and I like to think of it often when I think of my ex husband. "Thank you for being you, You've made me be ME"

Why I like quote you ask? I learned basically what you have been spreading through this blog. WE have difficult experiences and are able to learn and grow from them. I have learned all the right things to do from the hard experiences I have had. I have loved reading your posts. Mara, your hair is so pretty! Danny- you have great hair too! That was a pretty awesome looking machine for your hair cuts. haha! Anyways, your posts seriously inspire me. IF I ever make it to your part of the woods, I would love to meet you both! And.. if you ever are in good ol' Ogden, UT.. I can make you my famouse Spaghetti Dish :) It is not really famours but my family and friends love it! I hope your day is filled with love and happiness.

    xoxo,

    Kim :)

  5. i'm such a lover of friendships! there's no one luckier than a girl surrounded by good friends! my most solid friends came from college - a house of 10 girls (and three bathrooms) and no fights! it was fantasy land! 7 years later, we travel across the country to see each other, we talk on the phone for hours, and we plan girls trips! san francisco in july!

  6. Heard you this morning on BYU radio. I was ecstatic to hear about other fellow bloggers on BYU Radio! I was only able to listen to the first part of the show. I jotted down your address and hope to hear the rest of the show another time. Happy to hear about your success...I love your domain name & title of your blog. What a beautiful couple you two are. Look forward to reading through your posts. Sincerely, Shan from FamilyBringsJoy.com

  7. Don and I sat in our car and listened to you on Sirius BYU radio tonight. I read all of your blogs, but Don doesn't, so he was able to get to know you and what you are doing a little better. You both did great, and I was happy to hear your voices!
