My Plan for 2012

[Tonight Danny and I went on a date to Tasty Hand Pulled Noodle on Doyers St. in Chinatown. LOVED watching the guy in the back make the noodles. He flings and twirls and bangs the dough. You might actually jump in your seat when he starts whacking the dough on the counter. But yes, the result is TASTY.]

Aside from my goal that trumps everything else...a few things I'd love to do this year:

-Think about what other people might need & help them out more. I want to be more in tune with the needs of the people in my circle - family, friends, neighbors, etc. It's so easy to just keep life on the surface and dash off to do something else. I guess I just want to be a better friend.

-Tackle my closets and reduce my belongings! I love being a minimalist, which means a LOT needs to go......

-Stay in touch better with my friends & family in different parts of the country/world (and yes, that includes Westchester, NJ, CT, CA, NC, MA, UT, OR, AZ, IL, & Poland!)

-Read, read, read. I don't read enough these days! My brain cells need it! It seems the days just fly by and I never sit down to read. We *almost* did a read-a-thon today. haha. But it didn't happen. NY got the best of us. I'll keep trying.

-RUN or WALK daily...it's so good for the soul.

-Keep exploring New York. There are so many stones uncovered.

-Hike the Adirondacks with Danny. We're dying to do this.

-Take a yoga class. Don't you think I should be doing yoga? Yes, I know.

-Learn how to use our camera - cause I'm worthless on that thing. :)

-Visit Washington D.C., Philadelphia & Montreal with Danny. Friends, want to join in?

-Ride the bike path around the entire perimeter of Manhattan with a stop at Dinosaur BBQ, along the Hudson River.

-Run the Brooklyn Half Marathon.

-Ride in the 5-Borough Bike Ride in May. Lottery, lottery - - let us in!

-Travel to Brazil this spring for a Mormon Temple dedication in Manaus, in the heart of the Amazon. Danny spent two years here on a Mormon mission.

-Continue sharing a message of hope with as many people as I can. Have less filler posts like this one. haha. :)

-Get pregnant soon or fill out adoption papers. Whew! If things work out brilliantly, I couuuuuld be a mother next Christmas. That would be wild. We'll be doing our best to figure out how to get some kids one way or another. All will be well.

-PACK FOR ALT SUMMIT! (Yes, I leave soon....time to pack.)

What are some of your goals? I really would love to hear (I just might add some of yours to my list!) Can you tell I'm kind of a goal junkie? :)

  1. YOU'RE GOING TO ALT SUMMIT??!?!? As a speaker or a participant???? I live in Utah!

You are kind of celeb status to me since you are the most incredible mentor ever since you started this blog. Every post has rocked me to my core as I am on my own healing process, post-divorce. I love everything you stand for and promote and advocate and I would LOVE to meet you!!! You have this light inside of you that I am trying ever so hard to cultivate in myself.

Thank you for providing such an amazingly inspirational blog. I subscribe to 500+ and this one is in my elite blog folder. hahahaha.

  2. It's so funny that you want to visit Montreal and Washington D.C. because those are two places that I keep talking about visiting with a friend! Hopefully this year!

Having goals is so important and I think they're important to share for two reasons:
    1) It keeps you accountable.
    2) It may inspire others and they could inspire you.

So, thank you for sharing! Happy Tuesday, Mara!

  3. Come visit Philly! We'll show you around! :)

I like these "filler" posts too... it shows "real" life day-to-day stuff, which is fun to read.

  4. You have such an exciting life!!! All the neat travels you make, I'm jealous-but happy for you!! I live near Philly, so excited for temple to be built there!!! Used to driving 3 hours to Philly.
My goal is to give 52 dates for my hubby this year.
And become a minimalist-it's been a fun ride especially with two little girls
    Happy goal making!

    1. Whoops I meant a 3 hour drive to Washington dc

  5. My favorite hikes in the Adirondacks are around Pharoah Mountain and Pharoah Lake. I recently came across your blog and really appreciate the good you're putting out in the world. Thank you so much!

  6. great goals Mara! I have to say a few of mine are on the same wave-length as you.... I too am tackling closets and trying to de-junk! Also, thinking of going to my first YOGA class today! I really want to improve my attitude and patience when dealing with the little everyday things that bug me. I want to focus on what's really important, how we treat others, and be a good example so my family can follow suit :) Happy New Year

  7. I'm so happy that YOGA made the list. You will love. I promise!

  8. I love the whole minimalist goal. That's something that keeps resurfacing for me. It's such a freeing lifestyle!

  9. Hello, I have been peeping on your blog for quite some time and I LOVE IT! Thanks for your words of inspiration and love. I LOVED your story about finding your leather bag with your goods. That was amazing! I have been trying to find one of your old posts, and I can't seem to find it. You posted a picture of some medicine/herb that you use for you acne. Could you please tell me the product? I am 42 and still fighting acne, blah :(. Your thought process about love, etc. reminds me of a lot of work my mother has done on "Living in Truth", if you get a chance stop on over to her blog http://sherriejohnson.blogspot.com/. She shares a lot of the same things that you have! Keep up the good work, best of luck to you and your hubby! My blog is www.talenakerr.wordpress.com. Also, thanks for sharing the link to Elder Bushe's talk, that is wonderful, I have been listening to it almost everyday since then. Thanks! Much Love, Talena

  10. I live in NYC as well and just added yoga to my weekly workout routine. I have been going to "Yoga of the People" down on St. Marks. It is totally low key and GREAT for beginners. You should definitely try it out!

  11. Ha! My husband's two younger brothers both served in Manaus, basically back-to-back. Small world.

De-cluttering and purging is something of an addiction that I've picked up in the last few years. I can't go more than a few months without going through a room or closet to let some things go. I love it!

Also, this year our goal is to pay off just over $10,000 in debt (darn that graduate school!). Hurray for being out of debt!

    1. Tamra--come clean out my closets! ;) Actually, I spent my entire winter break organizing my house and it's much better now.

  12. Great goals! And for the record, I think filler posts aren't too bad ;) They are so personal! Helps us get to know you more :)

  13. I definitely need to go post some 2012 goals on my blog. I've been in a bit of a rut, so I need some goals to give me something to look forward to! My husband served his mission in Sao Paulo, so back in 2006 we took a trip to Brazil, including Manaus. You will love it so much! We took a trip out on the Rio Negro (Note: no mosquitos on the Rio Negro due to the acidity of the water!) and it was just so incredibly peaceful. I would go back in a heartbeat (minus getting horribly sick and landing myself at a Brazilian hospital...). Here are our photos in case you want to see them: http://mollychristian.smugmug.com/Travel/Brazil-December-17-2006/2335143_dL3g8C#!i=122183336&k=EijFh. The first 4 or 5 pages are of Manaus and the Rio Negro. I'm so jealous you're going for the temple dedication! That would be absolutely amazing. Have fun!

  14. Over Thanksgiving weekend my husband and I had a conversation that went something like this:
me: "I really want to bike around Manhattan. I wonder who I could get to do it with me?"
K: "I bet Christy would do it."
me: "You are right. I will ask her"
Sure enough, he was right. The three (or more) of us should plan an excursion in the spring!

  15. This year I want to be flled with light! I want to love more purely. I want to paint more (going to paint at a studio night in MA this weekend!). I used to each Yoga, but hope to actually get certified some time (probably not this year). Also planning to purge (with 5 kids it's a constant battle!) because we're moving to LA most likey (not Utah like we thought)!!!

My main goal is to keep my focus on Christ. Reading your blog adds to the light of my day! Thank you!
