I am such a sucker for Fall.
Here is what is on the docket to make this season awesome:
-Park Slope/Carroll Gardens Mormon Chili & Pie Cook-Off on Oct. 29 (write me if you'd like to join in to compete or just enjoy a good meal & good people & local musicians. It's such a fun event & you all are welcome to come.) Last year Danny's pie WON the very coveted 1st Place Pie Award! He called it "Better Than Yours S'more Pie" and he was inspired to make it because of our favorite milkshakes in the world (from Stand). Danny later found this recipe from Smitten Kitchen and used parts of it to make his own creation. BAM! It did the trick. Be warned, he plans to win again this year. :) He had his new pie idea ready to go on the drive home from the cook-off last year. :)
-A concert by Bianca Merkeley & Mindy Glenhill in NYC on 11/11/11 at Rockwood Music Hall! (Bianca is releasing a new album and Mindy will be singing songs from her new Christmas album.) These women are oh so talented and I am lucky to be able to call Bianca a dear friend of mine. (She and her husband rented my studio in Brooklyn when they were newly married! I am such huge fans of them both.) I'll have another post coming soon with more details about this concert that you won't want to miss!
-Storm King (A must. It's just awesome. It's a sculpture park on 500 gorgeous acres of scenery. You all really, really should go :)
-Can't wait to watch this documentary and this documentary at the suggestion of our friend, Abby (she always has the best suggestions for everything).
-A medieval concert in a 12th Century Chapel at The Cloisters.
-I'll be making homemade applesauce (I don't use a recipe, but just steam a bunch of apples 'til tender, add plenty of cinnamon and some lemon juice and a maybe a little water, then blend it all up in the blender. I love leaving the red apple skins ON so it has a beautiful pink color. It feels like dessert. No sugar needed.)
-A Moth Story Slam - I have been dying to go to one of these story slams ever since hearing about them from the Riches & Lows. There are a few dates coming up in NYC.... Riches/Lows, are you in for a date night?
-Rosemary Baked Mac n' Cheese & pie from one of our fav places in Tribeca, Bubby's. Don't miss the vintage photo booth in the basement! A must!
-I'll be making this easy, delicious Pumpkin Mousse (recipe from my beloved neighbor) for Danny:
1 15 oz. can solid pumpkin
1 6 serving package vanilla instant pudding mix
1/4 cup milk
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups cool whip
In medium bowl, at medium speed, beat pumpkin, pudding mix, milk and cinnamon until blended. Fold in cool whip until well blended. Chill
-Farmers Markets at Union Square and Grand Army (I'm such a sucker for Farmer's Markets. I'd rather shop for vegetables than clothes.)
-We'll be pre-ordering our Satsuma Oranges so that we have a box of those delicious yummies for the holidays.
-Can't wait to visit Babycakes, a gluten-free, sugar-free, vegan bakery in Manhattan. (I am dying to try their cupcakes.)
-I'll be looking for the limestone mansion on the Upper West Side that has the most gruesome display of jack-o-lanterns that will leave you awestricken. (I can't remember the street...Has anyone seen this? I think it's between 72nd & 74th Sts.) They are the coolest jack o's I have ever seen & apparently they do this display on their mansion steps every year! I heard the owner of the home is apparently the former editor of Rolling Stones?
-An "enchanting and slightly scary" guided flashlight tour by moonlight at the Greenwood Cemetery (oooohhhh!). They also have 'Late October Tours' with tales of murder, mayhem, spirits and ghosts led by Green-Wood’s historian (there are lots of NY gangsters buried there). And for the daytime, they have trolley tours. If you go, keep your eye out for the bright green wild parrots from Argentina who have inhabited the grounds since 1967, believed to have been accidentally released from a shipment crate at JFK!
-We need to get our photo taken in Tribeca at 20x24 Studio, home of one of the last remaining LARGE FORMAT, 20x24 INSTANT, VINTAGE POLAROID CAMERAS. (I have a few of these photos already, but need a picture with Danny!) You would die over this camera. The whole experience is just awesome. There's no other place like this. And Jen and John, the studio managers, are wonderful. Due to my job working for an investor in Manhattan, I was involved a bit when they set up the studio, after Polaroid shut down. Tell them "Mara Papa" sent you :) (this is my maiden name.)
-We need to visit gorgeous Bucks County, PA. I am a sucker for mid-century antiques & art, which can be found at this amazing auction house as well as the many antique shops in the area. And, I'd love to show Danny the famous covered bridges of Bucks County, not to mention the foliage.
-Loving this knitted wig for Halloween.
-Pumpkin Scones from this cozy tea shop, Alice's Tea Shop, the scones are "life changing." If you visit, look for the fun photography all over the walls! "Alice" is a former coworker of mine & the prettiest, funkiest Alice I've ever seen! :)
-Dying over these Halloween costumes and "will work for candy". Crud. and darling bats?? And an owl & friends? So unbelievably cute. (Especially cause I happen to know & love some of these little Brooklyn kids.)
-Loving this cozy outfit.
-If you need a new coat, check out Soia & Kyo, of Canada. They are carried at Macy's and there are tons more coats there than you will see on their website. Most of the coats have really nice lines (which I think is rare) and they are HEAVY WEIGHT!! I was shocked. They are NYC worthy.
DO ANY OF YOU HAVE OTHER GREAT FALL IDEAS? I would love to hear.
And friends, let us know if you want to join in on any of these things.
