Beauty Drawer

(Handkerchief designed by my dear friend, Abby, of Hi+Low.  It was inspired by a vintage hankie that you can see and read about here.  AND!  That vintage hankie?  I was the lucky, lucky friend that she gave it to.   :)  :)

OK, time for girl talk.  :)

What is your favorite make-up look?  Mine is on those pretty girls at J. Crew.  Their simple make-up with pops of color makes me want to call and ask "And what color exactly is that pink lipstick paired with those tangerine pants?? (and so...well, I went ahead and called them one time.  Why not give it a try?  And yes, within the minute they told me all their secrets.  J. Crew customer service is now my make-up consultant. :)

So, because I'm all about sharing beauty secrets...here are some of mine.  I've had quite a run of trying products over the years (my husband can attest to that!  haha :)

These are some of my favorites:

MAC Eye Paint - best eye shadow on the planet earth for my eyelids...cause this stuff will actually stay on.  This is the only product I've ever used that will not end up in a creased line.  Never seen anything like it.  I use the Still Life color and sometimes add an eye shadow on top.  (You can also get the MAC paint pots in more colors.)

Clinique Lash Power Mascara - I've scoured the earth looking for a mascara that will not end up on my face.  Cause that's not attractive.  But this mascara is the ONLY ONE I have found that will actually stay put.  Sometimes if I want more volume, I'll use this as a base and then add some Voluminous by L'Oreal.

Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation - OK, I've tried all the big shots.  But this oil-free foundation is the ONLY Oil-Free Foundation I have found so far that does not actually accentuate every little patch of dry skin.  Thank you, Bloomingdales, for letting me try out and return foundations until I got it just right.  :)
Nars Blush (Color: Orgasm) - Blush of the century, apparently.  It's recommended everywhere.

But!  For a shot of pink blush that will stay put ALL DAY....

Revlon ColorStay Lipstick - in Perennial Plum - used as a blush.  I think I prefer this to the Nars blush on most days.  Put a dot on your cheeks and rub it in.  It will brighten you up and won't budge.  It would stay on overnight if you let it.  I learned this trick from one of the most radiant, beautiful girls I know (Andrea Coombs!)
Eyeliner/Eye Brow Pencil - Avon.  Nice & cheap.  Works just fine.  Reminds me of being a little girl when the Avon lady would come over.

Lipsticks - I have quite a line-up...here are just a few favorites.

RedsRuby Woo by MAC  is bad-a** red.

You know Diva Orange from Vera Moore is my red/orange go to.
Hot Pink:  One of my all-time favorites is Nars Funny Face.  I get loads of compliments on this one every time I wear it.  I really love it.  I also love Carthage.

Soft PinksPink Plaid by MAC.  Just a decent color for non-bright-lipstick days.

Sometimes I wear Pink Plaid mixed with a shot of:  St. Germaine by MAC.

Chapsticks - I've used Avon "Care Deeply" since I was a child and got this in my stocking.  I use it every single night.  If it's full of harmful ingredients, I'm screwed.  :)

On my current wish list:  A peachy lipstick.

What make-up do you guys wear??  Do you have any favorites you can't live without?  (I am dying to hear!  :)

  1. My heart isn't necessarily set on any particular beauty products yet, but I have done a lot of trial and error with facial cleansers and such. I have really dry skin, so I needed a good cleanser that would not make that worse. I have fallen in love with DHC's Washing Powder and always get compliments on how soft my face feels/looks. I used to use Burt's Bees honey and shea body lotion on my face, too, but they tweaked their recipe and now it's pretty nasty, so I've kind of been floating around different lotions to see what works best.

Oh! I did think of one beauty staple- AVON Glimmersticks. I've never had an eyeliner stay on better. Their Glimmersticks Liqui-Glide is pretty awesome, and looks just like liquid eyeliner (minus me making a mess of it).

Now I feel like I need to start playing with lipsticks-- you've got it figured out, girl!

  2. Maybelline just did a new gel eyeliner which I'm in love with.. I go for the winged eyeliner look so it's perfect! I also love their dream matte mousse, does the job without being too heavy. Lancome do a really good mascara but I'm not sure of the name.

Aside from the eyeliner and a dab of the mousse to cover up under eye bags I don't really wear much make up, but the blusher tip is one I'll keep in mind for the future!

  3. Hi my name is Karyn and I am a product junkie. Just got a much anticipated order from Sephora. LOVE Urban Decay's Naked 2 eyeshadow pallete. I did my eyes up the minute I unwrapped it and my husband kept staring at me and telling me my eyes looked pretty! Sephora has amazing lip glosses, I got one called Fresh Peach which is perfect for summer. I also love Clinique Air Kiss. Lorac self tanner with immediate bronzer is also a new favorite for color without skin cancer. Great post, I saw the title and was hoping it wouldn't be pictures of a perfectly organized make up drawer or I would then have to hate you!

  4. I'm pretty picky when it comes to what I'll splurge for when it comes to make up. Somethings are drugstore/Target others are definitely department store/Sephora worthy. First thing I love is Urban Decay's Eyeshadow primer. I too can never get eyeshadow and eyeliner to stick, but this primer really does the trick. It says put all day. Especially for trick #2...

So I used to get this Paula Dorff Transformer...it can turn any eyeshadow into a liquid liner. I have a eyeliner brush from Sephora and can use any eye shadow for instant eyeliner--I l love it. You just scrape some shadow off into the lid of your shadow box and then add a drop of transformer and blend. Or you can just put a drop in the lid first and then wet a small corner of your shadow and go from there. Just don't put it directly into the eyeshadow or it will basically make it useless as eyeshadow. However, my newest trick is that I just use regular visine eye drops as a transformer (found that tip online) and the urban decay primer--this stuff stays put all day long--even when doing cat eyes.

Lastly, I love Bare Minerals for my foundation. This also really stays put and is very, very light but still gives great coverage.

  5. Mara,
Love this post, thanks! Out of curiosity, I must ask, what about sunscreen? I use powder foundation every day but feel a responsibility to use sunscreen. I have always used olay spf 15 (anti aging, not the plain one) because it creates this amazing base for foundation and makes my foundation look stunning almost all day. But now we are advised to go higher than 15 and I have been experimenting with Neutrogena spf 50 and don't quite dig it. It makes my makeup come off mid-day. So since you wear foundation also, I thought I'd ask....have you found a sunscreen that works well under your makeup?

Much appreciation for all you do/post!

  6. I'm very light on the make-up. I wear L'oreal True Match mineral foundation -- it includes sunscreen. And it smells nice -- kind of like the desert. I also use Revlon Color Stay lipstick in Perennial Plum! -- but on my lips. That's it. I usually do some powder mid-day, and some Burt's Bees tinted lip balm.

I try to use products that have good ratings on the "Good Guide", particularly for health ratings. I've been known to stand in Target checking the ratings before buying stuff. http://www.goodguide.com/#

  7. Oh it's so true. I love NARS blush orgasm!!! It's one of my favorites. It was really funny when I first started wearing it, because I was only like 14 and the girls didn't want to tell me what the name of the color was. So for years I just brought the empty container in and asked them to get me more of it. I laughed when I finally found out.

  8. i have the same melty eye makeup problem! i've zipped through 32464321 mascaras to find the one that will keep it on my eyelashes and off of my face! i'll give clinique a try - i haven't been to their since i was 16! - but i've also had luck with blinc and bobbi brown's tubular mascara.

i am on my way to nordstrom today to buy your pinks! let's hope they look as good on me as they did on you! if you caught me staring at your lips when you were talking, i wasn't being a creep, i was glued to your lip color!

  9. Lets have a girls night where everyone brings their favorites to try. Or is that gross? If so, we should at least have one for curly ladies where everyone brings a bottle of their current favorite hair product and some Muji travel containers (http://www.muji.us/store/travel/packing/acrylic-stacking-case.html) and we dispense samples for all. While eating treats, obviously. Divide and conquer.

  13. MAC Del Rio lipstick is a perfect berry red lip stain. And Comfort Zone's Absolute Pearl face cream is the only one that I have never broken out with and that leaves me with beautiful even skin.

  16. Mara. I'm converted. I was looking for a new mascara and remembered your recommendation. I've been wearing it for a few months now and I have to say I love the Clinique lash power. NEVER would've tried it if you hadn't suggested it. But it makes me happy every night when I take it off (so easy!). So thanks!
